Parenting through a rational lens: Books written by an evolutionary anthropologist

Anthropologist Sarah Blaffer-Hrdy’s compelling book, Mother Nature: Maternal Instincts and How They Shape the Human Species, is about the coevolution of mothers and babies.

Is motherhood about simple instincts to nurture? No. Throughout human history (and even before), mothers have had to make trade-offs between quality and quantity of offspring. Babies, meanwhile, have evolved to be as appealing as possible–attempting to persuade their mothers to invest in them.

Some of the subject matter will delight you. Some of it will disturb you. But it’s all fascinating, and likely to change the way you see the world. Highly recommended for any thinking parent or person interested in the evolution of human behavior.
